Community Special Events
To enrich their children's experiences, families are encouraged to participate in a variety of community events. These are not Mountain Oaks sponsored events.

May 31-June 3, 2012 – Thurs-Sun daytime
Step back in time to the year 1852 and discover what life was like in a gold diggings encampment! Over 150 volunteers help recreate this time in history by living the life of a miner, merchant, actor/actress, and more. School tours are led Thursday and Friday by reservation. YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST
Calling all young playwrights! YouthPLAYS, the publisher of plays for young actors and audiences co-founded by 2010 CA Thespians Visiting Playwright Jonathan Dorf, is delighted to call for submissions for its second annual New Voices One-Act Playwriting Competition. Playwrights 19 and under have until May 1st to turn in their best one-act plays and win prizes of cash, software from our sponsors Final Draft and Great Dialogue...and the winner receives publication with YouthPLAYS! This year's conference is August 2-5th in Sacramento.

It is a great conference, full of lots of great workshops for all ages and held at a great facility with lots and lots of other homeschoolers!

For HSC members - FULL conference is $115 for adults and teens, $100 for kids, $35 for young kids 3-5, and $40 for caregivers (which can be one of the parents if you both attend).

What: A Program of California State Parks, the California State Parks Foundation and the Pacific Leadership Institute.
Goal: To empower youth to access the outdoors an unlock their leadership potential.
Objective: A three-day leadership training for youth ages 14 to 17 in outdoor activities, team building and leadership skills while camping at a California State Park. Upon completion of the training, the youth will use the experience and skills learned to organize a minimum of 2 outdoor events for their peers; PLAN, PREPARE, AND LEAD a recreational outing & a service project. Financial support may be available to help with the events.
When: Opportunities from May through October.
