Columbia's Gold Trek Field Trip Wednesday, October 17
This field trip to Columbia State Park on March 22, 2013 is primarily for fourth graders, but other grades may also go. This activity is designed to replicate the experience that many young men faced as they traveled from Stockton to the diggings in search of gold. A series of pre-visit activities are provided in the Teacher's Packet which can be done at home during the weeks prior to the field trip. These activities, which include baking hard-tack and creating journals, help students to arrive at the park prepared for their Gold Trek. Students will be divided into companies. When they arrive at the park, the companies participate in an auction where they have the opportunity to spend or save their money, purchase maps, carts, supplies and shovels, and start on their journey. Along the route to the gold fields, they encounter charlatans, merchants, ferry crossings, and opportunities to make critical decisions that impact their ability to arrive at the diggings ready to work.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Jean Hutton for more details, materials and to sign up. We only have reservations for 14-16 students, so sign up now!

December 16th will be a fun-filled day at the San Andreas site. We will start off the day with a Dr. Seuss play “The Cat in the Hat” performed by the Mountain Oaks San Andreas theatre group at 9:30A. Our Winter Craft Day extravaganza will begin at 10A and will end at 1P.
We are asking everyone to bring at least one adult sized clean white sock, one child sized colored sock and either old or new Christmas cards. We will be making some of the favorites again such as: decorating gingerbread cookies (which will be made by the teens beforehand), making candles, trivets, and bath salts. We will also be making sock snowman, Christmas cards (we would like to have everyone make one that will be collected and taken over to the convalescent home by Sylvia B.), bracelets, handprint reindeer, cinnamon frames, pipe cleaner trees and candy canes, popsicle reindeers, and a candy cane mouse. We have teens signed up to work at the tables and help the children which will allows the parents the time to enjoy the day being with their children instead of stuck working.
Everyone will be asked to help clean up and then we will enjoy a nice potluck holiday feast and cookie exchange together. We would like to do it as a traditional holiday feast and ask families to sign up with Rhianna or Samantha to let them know what you are bringing. For the cookie exchange, you are asked to bring your favorite home-made cookie/dessert and at least 10 copies of the recipe to share. This is a wonderful time to try something new and add to your recipe collection.
To end the day on a high note, the theatre class will perform the famous Dr. Seuss story, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. There will be a Donation Jar at both theatre performances to help fund future performances.
We hope everyone will attend this wonderful event. It is a great way to kick off our holiday season and enjoy time together as a community.
Things to Bring:
Clean white adult sized sock
Clean colored child sized sock
Old or new Christmas cards
Food for the potluck (please remember to contact either Rhianna or Samantha to sign-up for a dish to bring)
Favorite homemade cookie/dessert and at least 10 copies of the recipe

Among those who helped were; Aurora Q, Ben Q, Kayle H, Nick R, Claudia G, Alyssa G, Tiffany G, Emily S, Cole S, Liberty S, Rose H, Cindee W, Sarah R, Jacob Y, and Uncle Steve. With our share of the profits we were able to keep $800 in books from the Book Fair. These books will be distributed to all three sites. In addition, we will be able to order more books from Scholastic later in the year. We are very happy to see so many of our students reading!

Thank You! Wednesday, October 5
A big thank you goes Christina S. for all her hard work cleaning our doors, windows, counters and walls etc. With flu season upon us, her work has been a big help with keeping the germs at bay. She's been focusing on the front office a lot which is great considering all of our families touch these doors, little kids touch the windows and just about everyone runs their hands over our countertop. If anyone else would like to help her with this job on days when she isn't here, that would be wonderful as well!

Temple Grandin Movie Friday, September 30
Next Friday, October 7th, at noon there will be a showing of the movie "Temple Grandin" in Valley Oaks. It's the true story of a woman with autism born in the 50's. In part due to her autism, she was able to understand and identify with the reactions animals have to light, sound, movement, new surroundings, etc. She redesigned slaughter houses for cattle to make them more humane and now over half of the slaughter houses in the US are patterned after her design. An incredible story, very well done, about two hours long. The movie is open to families, but has an NR rating so parents of younger students should research the story first. If you plan to attend, you must RSVP to Jacqueline at ext. 2227 or jdennis@ccoe.k12.ca.us.

End-of-Year Book Return Tuesday, May 10
The end of another school year is fast approaching. Books are due back at your site library no later than the last day of school, Friday June 3. The library will not be open after that date. Your prompt return of books contributes to the smooth operation of the library. Any unused consumables and answer keys returned now will save us having to order them for next year. Families who have no overdue or unresolved lost books may check out books for the summer if they wish. However, textbooks that you check out for the summer but have not ordered for the 2011/12 school year MUST be returned no later than the first day of school in August. It is very important that these textbooks are returned by this date as we will need them to begin filling orders for the new school year. Please remember that a clear library record is required before you can check out books in August.
As always, please speak with a librarian if you have any questions or concerns.

R.O.V. Competition Results Monday, April 4
On Saturday, April 2, three Mountain Oaks Teams competed at the 11th Annual Underwater Robotics Contest in Monterey. Our teams started preparing for this competition in November and then met weekly in Stockton starting in January.
The competition was tough. The Ranger teams went up against 12 other schools, some who had a budget of $2000 per R.O.V. and met daily to work on their projects. Our teams competed hard, interviewed well with the engineering judges and prepared display boards. When the final results were tabulated, our San Andreas Ranger Team won the "Guts and Glory" award for working well under pressure, and our Amador Ranger Team won the "Team Spirit" award. Our Scout team, which consisted of 5 students who had never competed before, finished one mission in 1/2 the time allowed, and did an excellent job overall. Since they were one of 43 Scout teams competing, they did not place, but they now have lots of experience for next year's competition. I am extremely proud of all of these students who showed that where there's a will, there's a way!
I'd also like to thank all the parents who put in many hours driving, encouraging, and helping to make this competition a success. We couldn't have done it without you.
San Andreas Ranger members: (listed alphabetically) Bethanni R., Cole S., Katie J., Matt J., Miranda M.
Amador Ranger members: (listed alphabetically) Rebecca B., Donald B., Payton B., Jasper G., Lars T., Jeremiah R.
San Andreas Scout members: (listed alphabetically) Bryan L., Dylan R., John L., Sam L., Travis B.

Please Return Unused Books Thursday, February 24
The new semester is a good time to look through all the Mountain Oaks materials you have at home. The return of anything you may be finished using or have decided not to use will be greatly appreciated. An unused book sitting on your shelf may be just the book another student needs. Now is also a good time to renew or return overdue materials. These simple steps will help to lighten our work load in June.
Thank you from the Library Staff.

GOVERNING BOARD ELECTIONS Wednesday, February 23
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! It’s election time again! The time has come to elect new Governing Board members. This year we have two positions to fill: 1 community member and 1 parent member. We are trying something new this year by having the election held online through the Survey Monkey website. The purpose of using Survey Monkey is to allow the Mountain Oaks Community members to meet the Governing Board candidates by reading their applications while determining whether to vote for or against their election to the Mountain Oaks Governing Board. Check your email and follow the link to Survey Monkey, then VOTE to exercise your voice as a part of the Mountain Oaks community through this electoral process. Board members elected now will serve two-year terms ending in 2013. If you do not have email or a home computer, please stop by your local site and pick up a paper copy of the ballot and sign the voters’ log, or call us and we will mail a ballot to your home. Elections start now and will close Sunday, 3/6/11, at midnight. Paper ballots must be postmarked prior to Sunday, March 6th, at midnight.
Check your email for link to vote or pick up a ballot from your site secretary.

Lockdown Drills/Fire Drills Wednesday, February 16
Most of you are very familiar with fire drills. This year we are going to incorporate lockdown drills as part of our school's emergency response and preparedness.
Emergency response has two forms, in one scenario the danger or concern is inside (fire, leaking gas line), in the other scenario the danger or concern is outside (dangerous intruder, escaped tiger from PAWS).
Our aim is to Be Prepared!
Guidelines to be implemented in Lockdown are posted in every classroom on the wall next to the door. There is also a red five gallon bucket in every classroom containing some food and water if needed.
Lockdowns will be announced over our public address system, "Your attention please: Lock down. Implement lockdown procedures. Teachers are to lock classroom doors and keep all students inside the classroom until further notice. Do not open the door until notified by an administrator or law enforcement. If outside, proceed to the nearest building and lock down."
If you have any questions or concerns about this drill, please call Jacqueline Dennis ext 2227 or Anne Colman ext 2252.

Amador Weekly Volunteer Thanks Thursday, December 16
On behalf of the staff at the Amador site, Jeannie, Trevor and Valarie wish to convey a HUGE thank you to our Steering and Workshop committees. In these tough economic times, these folks make tough decisions and respond with dedication and caring. The people involved in these committees continue to give their intelligence and time to this school in many ways but particularly in these very difficult venues. Thank you all so much.
We had a wonderful Craft Day due to our many parent volunteers. A special thank you goes to the band and to Ellen, and to Tracy and Pat for organizing the event. The kids had a great time and it was because so many parents joined in the fun to help and teach crafts. We would also like to thank the staff. Sometimes we forget how much volunteering is done by folks that don’t have children here. Thank you all for making this school a great place to be!
Happy Holidays!
We also have our weekly volunteers to thank: Darlene for her work in the cooking class and the community outreach program to let folks know we’re here, Kristin who lovingly takes care of our floors, Dawn for her work on the rugs, Vicci for breakfasts, Judi for the chemistry copies and general dusting and Rose P. for some writing books.
We have lots of volunteer activity and on behalf of the staff at the Amador site, Trevor, Jeannie and I (Valarie) appreciate all you do.

San Andreas Winter Craft Day is Coming Saturday, November 13
Winter Craft Day will be Friday, December 17th from 11A - 2P at the San Andreas site. This is one of the biggest events of the school year. There are several fun crafts for the students to make, from homemade candles, gingerbread cookies, homemade bath salts, trivets, and many other great crafts to give as gifts or take home for your own enjoyment. This year we will be adding two Ancient Egypt crafts to our Winter Craft Day to help get everyone excited about the Ancient Egypt Living History Day that will be on Thursday, May 12th.
After the wonderful responses we received last year, we will be doing a potluck and cookie exchange again this year from 1-2P. Families are asked to bring a dish (preferably an Ancient Egypt dish) that would feed roughly 10 people and a batch of your favorite homemade cookies or dessert to share and at least 10 copies of the recipe. This is a great way to end a perfect day of fun, friends, crafts and to expand your recipe file.
We are in need of the following items:
Buttons
Clean Glass Jars (jelly size preferred)
Clean white socks
Clean kids size colored socks

Amador Weekly Volunteer Thanks Thursday, November 4
We have a long list of volunteers this week. Our Halloween gathering was a great success due to the volunteer effort at the Amador Resource Center. Marlene F. got Rudy, her son-in-law, for the D.J., teachers helping were Trevor and Rose, parents were Kristi K. and her friend, Katelynn (Connor’s Mom), Tracy and Pat were instrumental in the organizing, older students helping included Sam R., Ryan M., Ryan B., Gitaine R., Daniel C., Conor B., Lars T., Aubrey B., Kalynn B., Eli B., Kerry B., Justin, Matt J., Garrett M. and Colin M. Thanks to the candy and prize donators and the multitude of helpers who set up and cleaned up. It was a real Mountain Oaks affair with everyone coming out to help, work together and have a good time!

TIME TO GET READY FOR THE GEOBEE - Tuesday, January 4 @ 10A Wednesday, November 3
Greetings to all 4th through 8th grade Mountain Oaks students! It is time to begin preparing for the school GeoBee, to be held the first week of January. This is an event that Mountain Oaks has held for over thirteen years and many students have learned a lot of interesting geography in preparation for the competition. The competition will be held at the Amador site. The winner of the school level competition will take a written test provided by National Geographic and sent to them for scoring. The top 100 scorers in the state will be notified to compete in the California state competition. Three times Mountain Oaks students have gone on to the state competition, with Jasper G. being the most recent (2010). Don't wait to start studying! In fact, hopefully, geography is a part of your daily curriculum as it makes learning about different cultures, customs, economies, weather, etc., etc., much more interesting! Here are some excellent websites to help you in your GeoBee preparation. For more information call Janet at 1-888-686-6257, ext. 2256 or email jkendig@ccoe.k12.ca.us. Band Thursday, September 23
Hello Homeschoolers!
My name is Ellen Davidson and this year I am starting a band which is available to all Mountain Oaks families. I am teaching Thursday mornings in Amador. I am still working out the specifics of the schedule, but all classes will fall between 9A and noon.
Anyone who is interested, and has not contacted me yet, should drop me a line and I can meet with you and your student to get started.
I am teaching flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone. The more musicians we have the merrier! This is a beginning class so there is no experience necessary (though I am happy to include experienced players too). Students will need to provide their own instrument and supplies.
I am a credentialed music teacher and have 5 years experience teaching band students from beginners to high school. All 4th grade and older students are welcome.
Contact me with any questions at ecdavison@yahoo.com

We are all well aware of the current economic situation and the stress on our entire public education system. This coming year our Mountain Oaks budget will not stretch to provide individual families with many of the supplies we have offered in the past. We are asking families to pitch in by providing their family with the needed Back-to-School supplies. The items shown on the linked list are only suggestions. Please feel free to tailor the list to suit your particular family’s interests and needs. Check your local retailer’s websites or newspaper ads (Staples, Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, K-Mart etc.) for current specials, rebates and coupons you can use to stretch your dollars. Thank you for your continued support of our school and your students. For school supply list, click on this article’s title.

In these challenging economic times, Mountain Oaks School anticipates that it will be necessary to adjust our educational programs and operations to cope with a reduced budget for the 2010-2011 school year. If we do not adjust our programs and operations, we will spend more than our income. Mountain Oaks Governing Board is seeking your assistance so that any adjustments in spending will have your input and will reflect your needs. This is your opportunity to be heard by the Mountain Oaks Governing Board as they make the hard budget decisions for the upcoming year! We want to understand how each of these items impacts you and your family. We request that you give thoughtful consideration to these issues and provide us your feedback. Parents should answer this questionnaire on behalf of all their children enrolled in Mountain Oaks. Students in grades 9-12 (effective with the Fall 2010 semester) are encouraged to answer the questionnaire independently, on their own behalf. Staff members are encouraged to participate in this survey. Your input is greatly appreciated and we value your time in helping us to understand your priorities. This survey addresses current programs and services that may be impacted by the budget shortfall.

Please send a lunch with your child. Activities will be set up in the library and the art room. We will all be watching a movie after lunch so children may want to bring a pillow and/or blanket. Teens who plan to be on campus, but not attending the Retreat should sign up, in advance, with Sharon to help with childcare.

We need every family to fill out this form and turn it in as soon as possible!
Hello Everyone,
I know you have been inundated with forms, but unfortunately I have one more that needs your immediate attention. I would like to apologize that the attached survey was left out of the back-to-school packet.
This year’s survey should save Mountain Oaks over $103,000, a huge number in today’s budgetary environment. We see direct savings in discounts for telecommunications services, internet access, technology equipment and other services. These savings enable us to free up dollars to be spent on services and curriculum for students.
I need your help! Please complete and return this survey within the next few days. It is a clickable form which you may save and email back to me at shamilton@ccoe.k12.ca.us or you may print it and return it to the front office or your mentor teacher.
The information collected is strictly confidential and will not be shared with any other entity.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Samantha Hamilton (Administrative Assistant)
